The UK Geoenergy Obervatory at Cuningar Loop in Glasgow, run by the British Geological Survey, offers scientists an unprecedented window into the subsurface. Data from 12 boreholes, fitted with state-of-the-art sensors, will help improve our understanding around the use of warm water from abandoned mines as a renewable heat energy source for homes and buildings. The observatory was commissioned by UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI’s) Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) on behalf of the academic community.
